LOCAL CAPE TOWN BUSINESSMAN WINS COVETED TOURISM AWARD

Local businessman, Shaheed Ebrahim walked away with the coveted title of the Western Cape winner of the Emerging Tourism Entrepreneur of the Year and is now in the running to become the national winner of this title. The provincial winners were announced at a gala dinner on the 26th of September, which was the eve of Tourism day which was celebrated on Tuesday 27 September. The finalist represents the cream of South Africa’s small and medium tourism business. Ebrahim is the founder and owner of Escape to the Cape, a destination management service that offers shuttling services, guided tours, accommodation arrangements and business services to the public. They provide luxury, convenient and state of the art technology services.

The concept for the business came from his extensive travels. He realised that there was a gap in the market, for tour operators who could cater for the needs of today’s discerning and technologically savvy traveller.

Shaheed Ebrahim entered the tourism sector with no experience or expertise in this sector whatsoever. After successfully completing his tour guiding course he quickly realised that being a qualified tour guide was not enough to secure business. Other tour guides had repeatedly told him not to bother with government and similar institutions who offered assistance, as it was perceived to be a waste of time. Many just advised him to seek employment. Fortunately having been in the corporate sector for many years, Shaheed realised that he should leverage whatever assistance he could get to grow his business and to learn. With this in mind he joined the Tourism Enterprise Partnership (TEP) and has never looked back.

“With the guidance and assistance of TEP I have managed to structure my business and focus on key areas,” says Ebrahim. He was incorporated into a TEP mentorship programme and his relationship with his mentor was the key to his survival in the early months. “The constant support, advice and encouragement offered by TEP and my mentor ensured that I did not throw in the towel,” says Ebrahim. TEP also partly sponsored his trip to the World Travel Market in London in November 2010 which afforded him an opportunity to secure business as well as gain insight into how the world’s most successful tour companies operate. Furthermore he attended several TEP training workshops including customer service, marketing, business planning and social media training.

Escape to the Cape is a young and dynamic Cape Town based tour operating company. It was started by SHAHEED EBRAHIM, a university commerce graduate who has worked both abroad and in South Africa as a private banker for a large international bank.

In his frequent international business and leisure travels and everyday interaction with foreigners, Shaheed realized that many of the local Cape Town tour operators did not offer a full, affordable, informative, safe and luxury tour experience of the standard that foreigners expected. He thus set out to devise a unique tour concept based on the following broad principles:

All prices quoted are fully inclusive of all entry fees. There are no hidden costs!

Light snacks and bottled water are provided on all set tours and a light lunch is also included on set full day tours.

All tours are conducted in a luxury air-conditioned vehicle which is substantially insured for passenger liability and has the necessary legal permits. The vehicle is equipped with satellite tracking, a quality public address system, an onboard fridge which can keep drinks both hot or cold, multiple cellphone and laptop charging facilities, 3G internet access and a netbook at your disposal.

All tours are conducted by young, energetic and knowledgeable guides who are passionate about Cape Town and who are government registered and accredited.

Tours are designed in such a way that you are often taken off the beaten track so that you experience not only the tourist elements of the City but the cultural diversity of everyday life - warts and all!

There are special tours which accommodate children and babies. The tours are designed to accommodate children's needs allowing enough flexibility for meal times, rest, and play and are aimed specifically at ensuring that kids have a ball of a time! There is a selection of toys in our vehicles to keep the little ones busy as we make our way across the City and beyond.

We will go the extra mile to accommodate your needs and interests. We can arrange almost anything you can think of ranging from a relaxing meal in the home of a local Capetonian to a heart-stopping ride in a combat air jet! Simply contact us to create a tailor-made tour just for you.

For your peace of mind Shaheed has police clearance with the South African Police Services.

We will advise and assist you at no extra charge with dinner and social arrangements, accommodation and local flight bookings. There is no request that is too big or too small. We are ready to assist you in whatever way we can!

There is simply no better way to enjoy the sights, sounds and many delights of Cape Town then with Escape to the Cape. Come discover South Africa with us and let us help you make memories to last a lifetime…..

Interview with Shaheed Ebrahim

What is your favourite thing to eat in Cape Town?

I love food and would be hard-pressed to name a favourite - it all depends on my mood and whether or not I’m preparing for a cycling race! But some of my favourites are my mother-in-law's crayfish curry, gatsbys (a delicious local concoction that I’ll tell you all about on your tour), a good South African style Braai (that’s a Barbeque to the rest of you) and of course koeksisters (you will get a taste of this mouth smacking sweet pastry on our Cape Malay Tour)!

What do you love most about Cape Town?

I have travelled to many countries and Cape Town is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities I have seen. The vibe, views, food, world class attractions and abundance of things to do and see make this any tourists dream destination. We have everything from sea and sand to mountains and forests, from buzzing nightlife and divine cuisine to sublime retreats and natural wonders. But on top of all that what makes Cape Town so special is its people. We a friendly bunch, with a sense of humour and even a decade after the end of Apartheid our locals are still intrigued by tourists. That means we always lavish you with the best treatment!

What are your top three favourite Cities in the world (apart from Cape Town of course!)?

Mumbai for its manic madness! London because it’s a global village and Zurich because I was once held at the airport for 24 hours on suspicion of a false passport- exciting times! The officials ended up apologizing and paying me a little something for the inconvenience. A quick currency conversion and those 24 hours were worth every Swiss Franc!

What do you do to relax and unwind?

I get on my bike and ride miles and miles taking in the fresh air and reconnecting with myself. It’s my quiet time and what better place in the world to cycle than Cape Town. On a typical ride I cycle through the city centre, pass the iconic table mountain and all the way along the coast. You can’t beat that!

What should every tourist to Cape Town make sure they fit in their to-do list?

Beyond Table Mountain, Robben Island and our beautiful beaches lies the picturesque Garden Route which most tourists do not know much about. A few days on the garden route is a must- this part of the Cape definitely has a special place in my heart! The garden route tour is sure to leave body and mind revitalized!

Then of course I think no tourist should miss out on a visit to the townships. These Apartheid relics are a living testimony to the spirit of our people in the midst of poverty and an enduring legacy of the impact of Apartheid that is felt even today. A Township Tour is a truly uplifting and memorable experience!

Which place in the world would you most like to visit?

Greece! I’m intrigued by the beauty and the history. Now let’s just hope my wife is reading this and gets the hint!

What place should a visitor to Cape Town not bother with?

The Zoo. You are in Africa so take advantage of seeing animals in their natural habitat with a visit to a Game Drive.

What is the funniest thing you ever saw a tourist do?

Well so far nothing worth mentioning yet. But I love a story from one of my mentors. On a day out showing some tourists the penguins at boulders beach (I will keep the tourists nationality to myself!) one of the tourists boarded the bus with a baby penguin tucked underneath his coat! Now I have no choice but to check all my clients every time they board the vehicle! Just kidding.

Which people do you dread taking on your tours?

None at all. Every tourist is unique and that is what makes my job interesting and it’s why I love what I do. Yes there are a few crazies sometime but hey it takes different people to make the world go round! I do however have a preference for tourists who are willing to interact with me. My job is not to lecture you or to spew out arbitrary facts and figures whilst you sink deeper and deeper into the oblivion of boredom. I want to engage with you and hear your views on our country. I want to learn about your neck of the woods too. It’s not a school lesson- it’s a holiday!

What makes you happy?

Seeing my clients excited, interested and enthusiastic about the places we visit and appreciative of the effort I put into organizing a tour. But no matter how much fun I myself have on the tours nothing in the world can compare to going home at the end of the day and seeing my baby girl. Her smile melts my heart everytime!
