The word, “peninsula” is derived from the Latin words, paene meaning “almost” and insula meaning” Island”. This scenic tour follows a coastal road flanked by a mountain range on the one side and the vast expanse of the Indian and Atlantic ocean on the other. It leaves visitors with a mesmerizing sense of being on an exquisite island surrounded by azure blue waters.
The Cape Peninsula stretches from the City Centre to Cape Point and is studded with beach-side pavilions, wealthy suburbs and the quant fishing village of Hout Bay. Our first stop is the Maiden Cove look-out point nestled between the ocean and Table Mountain. Enjoy the fresh sea breeze while capturing pictures of Cape Town in all her glory.
Our journey continues on to Camps Bay– one of the wealthiest and most trendiest suburbs in Cape Town. With its side-walk restaurants and endless ocean views this is where the City comes to play. We continue on to Hout Bay, a seaside village with a working harbor and home to many friendly seals which can often be seen frolicking in the water. If you would like to see the seals up close, you may opt, weather-permitting, to do a short boat trip to Seal Island.
The tour proceeds along Chapman’s Peak- drive an engineering masterpiece which was literally hewn out of the almost vertical cliff faces on the Cape Peninsula’s western side. The 10 km long pass connects Hout Bay in the north with Noordhoek in the south and is indisputably one of the most beautiful drives in the world. From there we visit a local Ostrich Farm to feed these unique featured creatures.
Our tour continues to Cape Point situated in the Good Hope Nature Reserve which is home to magnificent fynbos vegetation, birdlife, endemic antelope species and zebra. The Flying Dutchman Funicular transports visitors up a steep incline to a viewing point from which the Cape Peninsula can be seen in all her majestic beauty. It is believed to be the only commercial funicular of its type in Africa, and takes its name from the local legend of the Flying Dutchman ghost ship. Cape Point is popularly believed to be the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and no visit is complete without looking across the ocean to try to find this invisible line.
After a relaxing lunch at a nearby restaurant we proceed to the historic Simon’s Town, a village with charming Victorian architecture, a functioning naval base and a large Penguin Colony. Boulders beach is home to a growing colony of the vulnerable African Penguin. Here you will have the unique opportunity to walk across wooden walkways allowing you to view these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.
